About South African Christmas Recipes

Hello, and welcome! I'm Janine, the cook and writer behind South African Christmas Recipes.

I was born in Benoni, just outside Johannesburg, and some of my happiest childhood memories were made in my Afrikaans grandmother's kitchen in Pretoria. There I learned that a pot of food is how a family shows its love — and that the best recipes are the ones handed down, not looked up.

At home, my mother passed on her love of baking and gave me full range of her kitchen. I baked whatever I liked, made a glorious mess, and slowly learned the skills and confidence that still carry me today.

As a mother of four, my kitchen was never quiet. All those hungry mouths kept me cooking every day, and they gave me room to test my creativity — to try new ideas, tweak old favourites and cook for a crowd every single night. That daily practice is exactly what this site is built on.

Why a South African Christmas?

When I married into a Greek family, I saw how proudly they hold on to their own food traditions — and it made me realise just how precious my South African heritage is. Our Christmas is like nowhere else in the world: gammon and roast turkey in the summer heat, a braai in the garden, trifle and melktert on the table, and the whole family gathered around.

I want to leave those traditional recipes to my children so they can make them with pride one day — and I want to share them with you, so your family can build the same kind of Christmas memories.

What you'll find here

Every recipe on this site is chosen for the festive South African table: Christmas lunch and dinner mains, desserts, baking, side dishes, salads, party snacks, festive drinks and dishes the kids will love. Recipes are available in English, Afrikaans-style Dutch, German, French and Spanish, so family and friends around the world can cook along.

My promise to you

Every recipe here comes from a real home kitchen. You'll find clear step-by-step instructions, metric measurements, honest tips from years of festive cooking, and food I have actually made and served to my own family. If it's on this site, it has fed people I love first.

Thank you for visiting. I hope these recipes bring as much joy to your Christmas table as they have to mine.
